1. Describe the stasis in the play: where, when, who, what, etc. in a paragraph.
Rez Sisters took place in the Wasaychigan Hill Indian Reserve, manitoulin Island, Ontario on a late summer of 1986. This also took place in the mid-morning of a "beautiful" late August day. The people involved in the first act were Pelajia, Philomena, Annie, Zhaboonigan, Marie-Adele, Emily, Veronique, and Nanabush. The first act of the play was about the females wanting to win a big pot from the "Biggest Bingo in the World" in Toronto. However, in order for them to get the money to travel there, they had to have many fundraisers.
2. What is the intrusion?
The intrusion would be when the characters find out about the "Biggest Bingo in the World" coming to Toronto. This is when the character sprung into action on finding out more about the event. They even planned out how they would get there, how long it would take, how much money it would cost and how they would raise money for the trip.
3. What is the unique factor?
The unique factor for the play was that today was the day that Pelajia decided that she wanted to go to Toronto.
4. What is the dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play?
The dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play is "do any of the characters win the prize money?"
5. Provide an illustration of the two kinds of exposition that the play has in it.
The first kind of exposition was when the audience learned that Zhaboonigan was raped after running out of the store. She has a moment to herself where she is trying to remember what happen when she was raped and who it involved. She was retelling what happen. She was walking back to the store when two white boys asked her if she wanted a ride. Her being the naive and innocent person she was, she said yes. After riding with them, the two boys raped her with a screwdriver, or probably what she thinks is a screwdriver. They then proceed to throw her in a bush. The sad thing was when no one realized what happened to her and it was never brought up again which as a little disappointing. Second kind of exposition was when the audience learned Emily was pregnant. This was learned through Emily and Zhaboonigan playing "slaps" to a point where Zhaboonigan hits Emily's stomach. Emily tells her not to hit her stomach, then proceeds to rub her stomach thoughtfully. Then she ask Zha if she wants kids one day. Even though this was a short moment, it gave really big hints to Emily being pregnant. First it was rubbing her belly "thoughtfully" then asking Zha if she wants kids right after.
6. Identify the most theatrical moment in the play and of what importance it seems to be.
The most theatrical moment in the play was when the women were having an argument (riot) and ended up throwing stuff and insulting one another. This show the breaking point for the women. They insult one another with realizing the impact it could have on them. For example, Zhaboonigan ran out of the store because of the riot, which caused her to be raped by a screwdriver because she was alone. For Veronique, she was on the verge of tears as Emily, Annie, and Marie-Adele where bullying her.
7. List some of the themes of the play.
Some themes of the play include: Determination, Teamwork, Dedication, and Self-Discovery
8. What does the chief character want and what are some obstacles that stand in the way of her getting what she wants?
In the beginning of the play, Pelajia wants to go to Toronto, because she wants to leave Wasaychigan Hill. What was stopping her from achieving this was herself. She kept saying she would leave one day but she never did. Because of her connection to this this place, it was hard for her to leave a place she use to call her home.
9. Describe some possible images in the play and how does the title help us understand the play.
One possible image in the play was when Emily was talking about the motorcycle gang that she ended up being in. Emily was in an abusive relationship. After a while she learned to fight back, so she fought for her life. She ended up taking a bus to San Francisco where she met "Rose and the Rez Sisters". They became her new family even if they weren't blood related. The way the title helps us understand the play is that based on the "Rez Sisters" that Emily met, it shows that healthy family relationships can help group dynamics. It also shows that given enough time anyone can be considered family, you all them to be.
10. Briefly define the family relationships that are examined in the play.
Family relationships is understanding how to function as a unity even though parts of the family does not get along. It also shows that family relationships can have people with different outlooks on life. For example, Annie was considered a slut because she was sleeping with Big Joey; however, it was revealed later on that Annie was in love with Big Joey which shows her view point of the situation.
